There is growing public knowledge about FGM. But too many people are still unaware that FGM goes on here in the UK; that vulnerable girls here remain unprotected and that this crime continues to go unpunished. Join our campaign against FGM in the UK.
FGM is illegal in the UK, punishable by a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. Despite this, the existing system for safeguarding vulnerable girls against FGM has failed to protect them or produce a single successful prosecution*. A 2014 survey estimates that as of 2013 approximately 170,000 women and girls in England and Wales are living with the consequences of FGM and as many as 65,000 girls under the age of 13 in England and Wales are at risk of undergoing FGM.
